Evangelical Lutheran Church on the East Rand (ELCER) Congregation
We are the Evangelical Lutheran Church on the East Rand, which we have abbreviated ELCER, rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it? We operate three centres of worship in Germiston, Brakpan and in Heidelberg. We have a congregation that mixes all the wonderful diversity that makes South Africa such an exciting place to live in.
Apart from services, we are a very active congregation. We have many groups, such as our choir, the brass band, seniors group, a youth group, bible studies and several other groups. We run an annual Fete, we call it the Jahrmarkt. It is a major feature on the East Rand social calendar. Every quarter, we have lunch together. After the service we serve a lunch, where everyone is welcome. Lunching together is a powerful means for building our community, and in a smallish congregation such as ours, this helps in forging bonds amongst us. Every week we have tea together after the service. This gives us an opportunity to chat, and to get to know each other and to hatch the next great plan. |
