Hayfields Lutheran Congregation

The Hayfields Lutheran congregation (official name: Evangelical Lutheran Congregation Bishopstowe-Pietermaritzburg) is a multilingual and multicultural congregation having its primary place of worship in the Church of the Cross in Hayfields. We celebrate our services in both English and German. The congregation embraces diversity offering a home to Christians from all walks of life and reflects the demographics of the community in which it ministers. We as a Lutheran congregation proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ emphasising God’s unconditional love and acceptance which we receive and are called to share in word and deed.
Activities in the congregation include youth and young adult groups, bible studies, senior’s meetings, brass band and worship team practise, outreach, charity as well as participation in circuit and church events like Brass Band festival, women’s conference and Co-worker’s training.  Various fundraising and fellowship events take place annually like the Easter Evening, Advent Evening and Winterfest. A percentage of the profit is donated towards a designated charity.
The congregation has strong links with the Lutheran Gardens Retirement Village across the road from the Church of the Cross in Hayfields.
The congregation aims to involve members in a variety of ways to give expression to the concept of the Priesthood of all Baptised. Members of the congregation are involved as service helpers; readers, lay-preachers; children’s church helpers; visitors of sick and senior members and in the congregation newsletter and functions committees. Congregation members are also involved in the decision making process through the congregational council as well as the bi-annual general meetings.
We work together with other Christian congregations in our area and organise ecumenical activities through the Hayfields Churches Network.  The congregation nurtures a partnership with ELCSA PMB North, South and Martin Luther Memorial Parishes, the Kenosis Community at Bishopstowe and Hamburg West-Südholstein Kirchenkreis (church circuit) in Germany.
